    brake pad pins

Do brake pad pins need to be safety wired? Looking at the rulebook it doesn't look like it.

Absolutely wire your brake pad pins. I know of guys who have gone off at triple digit speeds because a pad falls out. Last year we had someone crash into 13 due to something like this.

Don't worry so much about the specific rules as you do for your safety on this one!

This may be a dumb question but what keeps the pin from falling out on a street / non-safety wired bike? I've got mine wired but can't think of what keeps 'em in without the wiring.

    Jamie,

There are usually quick release pins on them or they screw in.

Usually not a problem, but a good thing to take care of for a full time race bike.

One of the stresses that the racebike sees that the streetbike does not is that we remove and replace wheels at a far greater frequency offering the opportunity for the pins to get dislodged.

One strong suggestion - use wire in addition to the stock fasteners, not instead of them.

For example, if you have a pad retaining pin (#2) with pin clips (#1) holding it

*don't* use wire instead of the #1 pin clips, use the pin clips and use wire to close the end of them. Reason being is that safety wire is quite prone to breaking & falling out whereas the pin clip is much more resilient.

Here's a picture of a really good way of wiring the pin clip ..

Most failures I've been aware of have been from people ditching the pin clips and just using wire.
