Has anyone ever won the World Superbike Championship in their rookie year before this year?

Ben Spies IS the first rookie to win a SBK title. Check out the fourth paragraph.

Although ,y short list is wrong, I'm not sure what the criteria is exactly. I was considering people that won the championship in their first full season of WSBK participation.

When Fred Merkel won the first time, it was the first year of WSBK...

I can't find Doug Polen on the rider roster of Race participants in 1990. He won in 1991.

I was way off with Ru$$el...
    ops:

Troy Bayliss participated in only 10/13 rounds. He was riding in the AMA that year for Ducati, but replaced Fogarty for the season when he crashed in P.I.

I could very well be missing something. Where are you coming up with the info? Did you look, or just read the article?
