    Philosophy on track gearing?

So when deciding gear sets at tracks how do you approch it?

do you gear for speed, drive from corners, gear to ensure dont cross gear changes in mid corners?

gearing for top speed is good if your a good late braker, but kill drives on short shoots, but if gear short for drive you will have a hard time to pull out of draft and pass under braking...

I would say that I gear for good power coming out of the slowest turn in second gear. The only way I would gear for top speed is if the track had a straight so long that I run out of sixth gear. Which I will say has never happened, Pueblo isn't even long enough.

I have heard some very good arguments why you shouldn't gear short just for drive coming out of corners. It basically just makes you shift more, which in turn will cost you time (no pun intended).

    Anyone want to chime in!?

I gear to be smooth, which means less shifts and faster lap times. However, do not go sofar as to rob your drive out of corners. glenn #62

In two years of racing I think I changed my gearing 3 times and I usually went back to what I was using before. With modern quick shifters only taking .05 of a second to complete a shift the number of upshifts per lap isn't that important to me. I gear for the corners and the first 50ft of the drive out of them. On a 1k superbike you might want to gear so you shortshift in places with less grip, but on my 600 on pump gas that's almost never a problem.

Frank, what is wrong with you? Are you thinking of putting like a 14-50 on your new R6? You could get great drive with that!!!!!!!!

OK, you and I are going to have to have a talk again......

Please don't make me do this!

It is all becoming clear to me now, I heard about the balloon animals! Do you really think gearing is what we need to be talking about?

Maybe we should be talking about having one of those balloons on your head.

You know this is all because I care!

Okay, maybe I'm dumb here, but isn't "drive" and "gear position for corners" pretty much the same thing? Maybe I don't understand what you mean by "gear position?"
