    steering damper

    Hello everybody,

The recent warm weather has brought me out of hibernation and got me fired up for race season. I still need a few things for the bike before then, springs for my weight, safety wiring, and primarily a steering stabilizer.

I am looking for recommendations and where to buy a damper. They all look expensive.

Maybe I could mount a screen door closer, they offer adjustable rates. These look pretty fancy:

I've read the marketing for the center mount as being less prone to crash damage.

    Thanks for the help.

    Looking forward to the season.

    Matt

I hope this is a joke?

The screen door closer is certainly a joke. A glimmering thought once damper shopping burnout sets in, but at attractive pricing.

Meanwhile, the request for recommendations on steering dampers is serious. Have any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Matt,

I have an Ohlins linear damper on my bike that I got from STM suspension. While the rotary (scotts / gpr) units are completely suitable, in my opinion they aren't as well suited to roadracing as the linear type. The ohlins is a good choice in this area because its completely rebuildable and well supported with parts. It was also expensive.

Dave is an expert, give him a call.

    Hey, thanks guys.

I like the idea of the 250 class. I picked up an SV650 in the fall. It is small, light, stabil and relatively low on power. It doesn't seem like it should need a stabilizer, but I see it in the rule book. The bike is relatively inexpensive, the stabilizer would be the most expensive part on the bike. :-)

I left a message with Dave at STM. He will see what he can find on Monday.

It was suggested that I post up in the wanted section and hope to get a deal on a used one.

Sure, those cheap door closers are pretty, but you really should go with a quality door closer instead.

I have an Ohlins linear damper too, and it's great - but if that's running rich for you there's a cheap solution.

On my SV I ran a stock GSXR unadjustable linear damper with a mount kit sold on the SVRider forum. $20 for the damper on ebay and another $30 or so for the bracket kit. Worked great - never had any issues.

You can use a few different OE type linear dampers with some modification. The physics behind the linear design is IMO better for road racing if properly installed than the rotary design as Rybo stated. I have the cheap OE Triumph unit on my Daytona with a heavier weight shock oil in it, and it works great. You can find good used OE dampers for $10-$40 all day long on forums and classifieds. That bracket set up for $30 sounds like a steal. Good luck.
