1st Annual MRA "Giro d'High Plains" Bicycle Race

*** 1st ANNUAL MRA 'GIRO D'HIGH PLAINS' BICYCLE BENEFIT CRITERIUM ***

So, I talked with Tony this past weekend and we thought it would be fun to organize an on-track bicycle race at the next round on Saturday night following the races. All proceeds will go to Zach and family to help offset his medical and crash-related expenses. In addition, Joe Logalbo is organizing a silent auction for Zach in concurrence with the benefit race, so keep an eye out for that.

$10 entry for riders/racers (feel free to contribute more to "Zach Fund" at entry). Following a Le Mans-style start, we'll hold a five lap sprint race on the shortened course to ensure spectators can see all of the madness (cut-off at turn 4-short and then again at 8/9). 1st place will receive $30, 2nd wins $20 and 3rd gets $10. The remaining amount will go directly to Zach and family. In addition, 'BEST DRESSED' participant, as voted on by spectators, will receive a prize package from BlackBerry (1x PlayBook 32gb tablet & 1x BlackBerry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway - approx combined value ~$500).

Details are loose and recommendations are appreciated (i.e. start time, feedback, comments, concerns, etc). This should be a fun way for us to build camaraderie once the track goes cold and will hopefully raise a small amount of coin for a fellow rider who needs it. The only two confirmed items are that we will require a helmet (motorcycle helmet - will make for funny pics) and will have a Le Mans-style start.

I've already acquired these two trophies... First place will receive the cyclist trophy (in addition to their purse, which they can choose to donate back to Zach Fund) and second place will receive the infamous golden loser milking goaticorn trophy

So, break out the Huffy, water bottle and spandex and be a part of the 1st annual MRA Giro d'High Plains (tour of High Plains) Bicycle Criterium!!!

***EDIT*** Please register and pay in advance by sending your $10 via Paypal to: david.p.mobley@gmail.com - If you don't have/use Paypal, we can take your money the day of, but you will be gridded in the back

So do road bikes run the full course and mountain bikes can cut corners through dirt and make their own path? :-)

I like the idea of fixie class and will enter that one if we split people. However, the more classes, the fewer we have in each and less possibility of a win payout. Thoughts?

Just got off the phone w/ Logalbo and we decided this WILL benefit Zach and family (original post updated).

I also added number of laps (3). Even though traditional criterium races are timed, I figure three laps should be enough. Thoughts?

Finally, I've updated original post w/ current entry list. Get in NOW and secure your spot for what should be an EPIC $hit show!

What if we started doing this every race weekend and build up a small fund for those that get injured? I think this race is a great idea even though I won't be able to make it.

Because there is only one golden milking loser goaticorn trophy in existence. This is a VERY elite, one-off race that should be taken incredibly serious!

No problemo. Hopefully we can raise some cash for Zach. His leathers are toast as well as the bike apparently. Then well of course, medical bills and a fancy fun ride in the whirlybird. All that adds up I'm guessing.

I'm in, but I will be riding my stupid Dyno BMX bike, so I will likely be battling Gallant for the goat trophy. Come up with a good one buddy!

Question, if this is after the track is cold, is sobriety optional or required?

Tony, I am not just asking for myself buddy.

    Current questions for Tony...

    - "Is sobriety optional or mandatory?"
    - "Are transponders required?"

My gut tells me no for both. Since the track is cold, I'm assuming you can drink if you'd like. This is a gentleman's race, so unless we have a photo finish, we should be able to figure out who came in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and last. Plus, I'm sure Chris Dale wants to relax after a long day of score/time keeping. It would be nice to get Nabber and crew to announce the race though.

Also, someone messaged me and said it would be fun to be able to place bets on the race for those who didn't want to ride. Anyone have an idea how we could do this to capture additional cash for the Ritchey fund while still paying out winner?

I also want to volunteer Rachael for racing in this too. She is telling me she wants to race really bad and that I am the lucky one, so, I'm getting her to try her first race.
