sprockets sizes?

so im thinkin about changing my sprockets from stock 17,40 to 16,42 OR 17,42. i ride 08 zx10. just wanna see what people think about dropping the front. ive heard that its not a good idea cuz of less sprocket to chain contact. so is 1 tooth down still ok? mainly asking because a few years ago i broke a front sprocket on my 636 that i dropped 1 tooth from stock.

Why do you want to make the change?

im making the change because i was using first gear alot and mis-shifting sometimes when shifting back into 2nd. just want to eleminate the need for first gear. i have a lot of gear left on the zx10. only hit 4th on the straight.. i was told not to use 1st gear.

Dropping a tooth in the front from the stock gearing worked well as novice gearing on my 675, but it may be a bit too short for a liter bike. But if you're only getting to 4th gear on the straights it sounds like it would be where you want to be.
