What is the rule of thumb for safety wiring the front axle and pinch bolts? On my 05 zx6r the axle and collar stuck out a bit on either side of the lower forks where you could drill a hole to safety wire. I am now trying to set up an 09 zx6r and both ends of the axle are recessed in the forks. A couple ppl have suggested drilling through the lower part of the fork and into the axle and collar but I really don't want to do this unless I absolutely have to. Just checking to see if this was necessary or if I could just safety wire the two pinch bolts together.. or if anyone had any other ideas.

Hope this makes sense, pictures would prob help!

You should be able to drill into only the axle, going at an angle from the outside towards the center.

Thats how I had to wire my older R6. The axle was flush with the forks, not recessed tho. If you need help let me know and we'll get it figured out.

I was wondering the same on my 675, I saw some pics of the older R6's like you mentioned Casey, but mine is literally flush with the fork, no lip to drill through, and it threads into the other side with no nut to wire.

Anyone have a photo of how they have theirs done?

Can you guys post a pic of what we are working with?

Found this pic of a 675, sorry if I am hijacking Pete, tough to see here but there really isn't a lip to drill into. I'm afraid if I drill the edge of the axle it will just pull out anyways.

Drill from the larger red dot towards the smaller red dot. Almost in the same angle that this camera is pointing. Then connect that to the pinch bolt that is closest, and then to the next pinch bolt, twisting the cable (about 12 twists per inch) between connections.

I am not really worried about the axle itself being wired as long as the pinchbolts are since once they are done the axle can't go anywhere. Now if the axle has a outboard nut I want that wired.

Good point Bart. After checking the rulebook only the axle nut requires wire. The axle itself does not:

5.2.2

B. Brake caliper mount bolts and brake torque arm bolts must be secured by safety wire, cotter pins or other approved means. Axle nuts must be safety wired, or castellated nuts secured with cotter pins or hitch pins. Hitch pin or “hair pin” clips must be safety wired closed. Self-locking nuts are NOT acceptable.

I personally like to wire up everything possible so if either of you want help wiring the axle, I'd be happy to come over and help you guys out.

Well thats good to know, in this case maybe I will just safety wire the pinch bolts. Looking now I can see how the collars are thick enough I can prob drill through at an angle. I will attach pics (if I can figure out how) of how my 05 is done and how the 09 looks so you can see my original concern.

To post pics, you have to host them somewhere first. Something like Facebook or PhotoBucket. Then either select the image code from PhotoBucket or right click and select properties if its a pic from Facebook or something.

I checked your pics, definitely possible to drill the flush part of the axle at an angle. If I can find pics I will post them.

Nice work, and I want to say thanks to Bartman for giving me the exact same answer to the same question a month ago when I met him at his shop. :D

I try to be consistant, makes the job easier to tell people the same thing it makes for less bitching down the road. :D
Of course there is no such thing as to much safety wire when it comes to you and everbodyelses hide.
