Looking to buy a used early 2000's 3/4 or 1 ton truck for towing. Any advice on what to stay away from?

Buy a dodge with cummins and the six speed manual. Don't get the dodge auto trans It's not heavy duty enough imo.

This is if your doing heavy towing. Light towing would probably be fine for the auto.

I personnaly would not reccomend the Chevys or fords either but that just my preferennce. I own a ford f350 diesel and I think the dodge/cummins motor is better.

Cummins FTW... Ford is in the shop half of the time and Chevy is bad ass as well but expect to beef up the transmission. And Chevy is proud, their diesels are expensive.

Dodge = Cummins
Ford = Chassis
Chevy/GMC = Allison Transmission

The dodge will probably be the best option. That motor will last forever.

I am very happy with my duramax and allison combo. pulls my BIG rig very well and the ride is great. All i have done to it is a programmer, 4" exhaust and bagged it.

I've been happy with my older Dodge Cummins automatic (1997). I turned it up a little and had a transmission built for it. Then I added an exhaust system, oh then changed the diff gearing, and some other stuff. It's kinda like racing, just a little addictive when you start upgrading them!

It's not as fast as the Chevy's or Ford big motors, but at 20,000# all loaded up I still get just over 10 mpg at 70 mph, and 20 mpg empty if I drive the speed limit. (Like that happens a lot!)
