We have made a change to the rule book to incorporate a requirement for tank protectors for all 06-07 Yamaha R6 race bikes.

Tank protectors required for Yamaha R6 & other vulnerable fuel tanks

Add before 6.2.6.L.

L. Aftermarket fuel tank protectors are required on motorcycles where the fuel tank is known or likely to contact the ground during a crash. Currently, the Yamaha YZF-R6 requires protectors with other models added by the VP of Rules & Tech as needed. MRA approved protectors are made by Traxxion Dynamics (http://www.traxxion.com/) or Erospace Technologies Inc. (http://www.eti-fuelcel.com/). Other protectors require prior approval by the VP of Rules & Tech.

Size wise these are the smallest tank sliders we have seen. this in my opinion does not mean less protection though.
We will also have this in stock soon.

That is a good question. I thought Yamaha changed the 08. have you seen one?

a few of us were waiting to get the 08 in sight also to check... It appears a slightly diff shape but still sticks out a bit... Does anyone have access yet to see if the tank is outside the frame like the 06/07 models ?

In addition the sharp angle seemed to form a more weak point that tore easily... Perhaps the sharp angle was smoothed out more???

I surely hope the 08 version won't have this problem....I can't imagine why they would go to all the time and cost of revising the bike (and changing the tank as part of the update) and NOT address this.

Of course, stranger things have happened....

i was on the market for a tank, wanted to put an 08 on my 07 but then figured it wouldn't work bec:
1. there might be someone who would contest for a non-homologous bike in a mfg $$ class.
2. i hear they changed the tanks to accommodate the new airbox with the YCCvVT or whatever its called.

Obviously if there "aren't" aftermarked parts available yet to protect the 2008 tanks, then we can't enforce it anyway.

After a couple 2008's burn to the ground, I'm sure that somebody will start making them...

I have seen the new tank, and yes, it is shaped similar to the 06-07's, but it does not have the sharp edge on it that Dion asked about. And that sharp edge folding over/creasing is what seemed to cause the problem. The new tank "appears" to be the same as as the R1 tank, which don't seem to be a problem.

Apparently the 08 frame, motor, swingarm, wheels, and suspension all fit the 06-07. If you use the new fairing stay even the fairings will fit the older edition, so I assume the new tank will as well, but the variable intakes might complicate things.

Aside from not being SS legal:

it is to my understanding that the new tank will not fit with the old airbox and throttlebodies, just as Justin mentioned.

I just pulled one of the 08's out of the crate today and it looks like it will have the same problem. They re-shaped it a bit but not near enough IMO.

You agree that it's similar to the R1, which we don't hear of burning to the ground all the time. :-k

But yet you say it will still have the same problem?? :?

Explain .... :-k 8)
