leleck and i were talking today about dirt bikes, and the possibility of fuel injection on them for 09.

the more ive been thinking about it; i question if its even feasible to put fi on a dirt bike.

does this mean the bike will have to carry a battery or will it have some mechanical fuel pump that can make adequate pressure on a kick start.

ive spent 5 min on google and didnt find any real information about the development being done in japan. anybody know anything about this?

Cannondales have FI been for awhile now, Yamaha looks to be coming out with a 250 Supermoto, street legal, that will be FI.
If they do go FI I'll be giving them a couple years to work out the bugs.

so it being street legal, that makes me think its going to have a headlight and a battery and so forth.

the supercross series bikes are probably a long way off from having fi

To be FI it will need a battery to run the ECU, injectors, and fuel pump before/during start (as well as a starter if it has one, which a street legal bike probably will). No real way around that, FI is based on computers and sensors that need juice to run.

I suppose you could rig up a hamster wheel to the electrical system and toss the little bastard out once you get 'er running though.

I wouldnt be worried about it at all... I remember reading in transworld mx theyve been testing the fuel injection for the past 2-3 years in japan... as well as they are on all of our street bikes. People were worried when the first suzukis/yamahas streetbikes switched over to FI, but there were little to no problems then, so I dont expect to see any problems on dirtbikes.

here are a few google'd articles i found

they already have ecu's on them, and they seem to do ok with little boot time when kicking.

funny how the first article was saying how difficult it is to deal with electronics vs jets. for some reason powercommanders/ecu's seem more friendly to me than pulling carb[s] pulling jets and plug chops

You have a hamster with an ECU? Damn, that's tight!

You beat me to the punch! I was just gonna say, we had a sales meeting 2 weeks ago and we knew the RMZ was going to be injected (shame the road going DR 400S version ISNT).
CAnt wait for these 08's to show up...especially the new ZX10R and the NINJETTE 250. It looks tight!

...and the NINJETTE 250.

Which BTW is reported to be carb'd in the US version, but FI in Europe. Interestingly, the US version has more power in the spec sheet I read.

And it needs it!!!
Good to see you at Brecks for the injured riders update. Hope all are well.

Word on the street is that KTM may have FI on a couple of their 2 strokes next year. The 300 & 250 XCW's already have e-start so it's a perfect fit.
