This was originally Aaron Fisks Proposal:
Perhaps not really a rule but I would like to suggest some method to classify practice groups by lap times.

For me the issue is with Medium Expert class. (Seems too big and too large of speed difference)
I don't want to get in the way of the fastest experts but feel penalized by having to practice with Slow experts where the closing speeds are way to big of a difference. (For the combined practices 2x Saturday, 1x Sunday..)

Not to pick on the 250's, but this has become more of an issue in the last few years. The 250 theme is cheap racing, and some racers haul ass on them and others, well they are just learning.

I understand the slow experts have just as much a right to be on the track as all of us, however I see a major issue coming at us if we allow this to continue. Thus a 2:20 lap time to be practicing with a 2:00 or less lap time (50% speed difference!)

Can we find a way for folks to feel safer?

Maybe we can get rid of the slow/Med/fast thing and just go by lap times instead. Maybe call it group A, B, C, D
A = 1:55 or less
B = 2:00 avg
C= 2:10 avg
D = 2:20 avg

Times are not hard suggestion, just an example. We would have to analyze the lap times to see if this makes sense with the number of bikes on the track at one time...etc..

I just wanted to start a discussion thread as recommended.

As a novice racer I am for this idea if you are indicating that practice groups would now include both novice and expert. This I think would make my practice sessions more valuable as there would be more riders in my speed range to practice with, be it following faster riders or working on passing skills with riders that are closer in speed to me.

However, I see the other side of the coin and understand that there is a different level of skill between novices and experts and this therefore affects the level of confidence in the riders around you. I would understand if the experts did not want to practice with the novices, regardless of the novices lap times..

Just my 2 cents..

Thanks for the read... obviously a hotly debated topic.. for the record, I am just fine staying in my novice practice session, I was only implying that I was okay with the idea posed...

I put together a proposal based on what I believe is the only practical way to further organize practice sessions while staying within our time constraints. The way I percieved the issue that Aaron had with the practice was, the combining of relatively fast Expert Medium riders with the Expert Slow riders in several practice sessions throughout the weekend created a high speed differential within the "Practice Group". This is only my perception, Aaron may furthur explain his concern.

Dennis,

The problem I see with your proposed schedule is that now on Saturday, all of the novice sessions are combined.

Previously 2 of the 3 Sat practices were combined with just one Nov Fast practice session.

The same problem that exists with Expert medium/Expert Slow is there with Nov Slow/Nov Fast. The closing speeds between A fast novice on a 1000 and slow novice on a 250 is just as bad if not worse than Expert med/Expert Slow. The added problem is that a nov slow on a 250 is probably less predictable than an Expert Slow on a 250..

Just my 2 cents..

You are correct. Time is the major limiting factor. Here is an option that would split the Novice groups up, but it reduces practice to 2 sets on Sat: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13q2T2EkKZ0mLNF56zABCXILSr1h13gpEYAmr_p0w85o/edit?usp=sharing

Here is what an option would look like for Groups A-D novice & expert combined: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bzsyqVDo6M6TioZ25KcZdSWxrUVUtKC4NQodVxmuCyw/edit?usp=sharing
